Why Winderly for Bhutan

Bhutan trips designed by someone who's done eleven of them

Most operators sell Bhutan as a checklist. Tiger's Nest, Punakha Dzong, a hot stone bath, done. We've been refining this trip since 2017 across eleven personal visits, and the difference shows in the day 4 raft choice, the lunch spot near Chimi Lhakhang, and the partner relationships that get you into properties when others can't.

Annie started leading Bhutan trips in 2017 after a private scouting visit. She's led every Winderly Bhutan trip since, alternating with our in-country partner Tenzin Dorji, a licensed Bhutanese guide based in Paro who's been with us for nine years. Tenzin handles permits, internal flights when needed, hotel relationships, and the small last-minute things that decide whether a trip goes smoothly.

I tell first-timers: Bhutan isn't a checklist destination. Three days won't work. The point is the pace. Long lunches, dzong courtyards, conversations with monks. The country resists being rushed, which is exactly what makes it land.

Sample Itinerary

6 days in Bhutan: the trip we book most

Paro to Thimphu to Punakha and back to Paro for Tiger's Nest. Fully customizable, but this is the rhythm we've found works. Pacing, hotels, and add-ons flex to fit your group.

01

Arrival in Paro & transfer to Thimphu

Paro to Thimphu 1.5 hr drive · 34 mi Elevation: 7,500 → 7,700 ft

Land at Paro (PBH), one of the world's most dramatic airport approaches, threading between Himalayan peaks. Drive to the capital, Thimphu, stopping at the Tamchog Lhakhang Iron Bridge, a 14th-century chain bridge built by the saint-engineer Thangtong Gyalpo. Afternoon at Tashichho Dzong, seat of the government and the king's throne room.

Stay   Amankora Thimphu (premium) · COMO Uma Paro (mid-luxe)
Tashichho Dzong overlooking the Thimphu valley
02

Thimphu's cultural highlights

Thimphu Walking + short drives Easy pace

National Memorial Chorten in the morning (built in honor of the Third King), then the 169-foot bronze Buddha Dordenma overlooking the valley. After lunch: the Folk Heritage Museum, craft markets in the old town, and the textile museum if anyone's interested in weaving. Optional add-on: a postal service stop to make personalized Bhutanese postage stamps with your photo on them.

Stay   Same as Day 1
03

Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass

Thimphu to Punakha 3 hr drive · 47 mi Pass elevation: 10,200 ft

Cross Dochula Pass at 10,200 ft, marked by 108 memorial chortens built to honor Bhutanese soldiers. On clear days (October–February), this is the best Himalayan panorama on the trip. Descend ~5,000 ft into the subtropical Punakha valley. Visit Punakha Dzong, the former winter capital, set at the meeting of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers.

Stay   Amankora Punakha · Punakha River Lodge · Six Senses Punakha

04

Punakha valley exploration

Punakha Walk + optional raft Easy to moderate

Morning walk through rice paddies to Chimi Lhakhang, the "Temple of Fertility" associated with the 15th-century "Divine Madman" Drukpa Kunley (the phallic murals make sense once you know the story). Riverside picnic. Afternoon options: a gentle Class II raft down the Mo Chhu, or a one-hour uphill hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten for sweeping valley views.

Stay   Same as Day 3
Terraced rice paddies and traditional houses in the Punakha valley below Chimi Lhakhang
05

Return to Paro & local life

Punakha to Paro 4 hr drive · 78 mi Re-cross Dochula

Drive back via Dochula (different angle, different mood). Stop in traditional villages along the way for tea or a farmhouse visit. Late afternoon: Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan's oldest temples (7th century, built by Tibetan king Songtsen Gampo). Evening hot stone bath at the hotel: heated river stones dropped into a cedar-wood tub. Essential prep for tomorrow.

Stay   Amankora Paro · Zhiwa Ling Heritage · COMO Uma Paro

06

Tiger's Nest hike & departure

Paro Valley 4 mi RT · 1,700 ft gain 2–3 hr up, 1.5–2 hr down

Early start for Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest), the iconic 17th-century monastery clinging to a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. Trailhead at 7,500 ft; monastery at ~10,200 ft. There's a cafeteria at the midway point where most groups stop for lunch on the descent. Ponies available for the first uphill section if anyone needs them. Afternoon: pack, late lunch in Paro town, evening departure.

Stay   Same as Day 5, or red-eye departure

The pacing was the win. Other operators would've crammed Bumthang in. Annie resisted and we ended up with two unhurried days in Punakha that became the highlight of the trip. Tiger's Nest was the postcard. Punakha was the trip.

I was nervous about the altitude and Tiger's Nest at 64. Annie handled it perfectly. Built rest into day 5, paced us on the climb, no ego about taking the pony for the first stretch. Made it to the top with energy to spare.

Booking FAQ

Working with Winderly

The questions that come up most often when people are deciding whether to book.

How does booking a Bhutan trip with Winderly work?

Start with a 20-minute discovery call with Annie. From there we build a custom proposal in 5–7 business days, revise it together, and confirm the booking with a 25% deposit. Final payment is due 60 days before departure.

Visa processing, flights, and in-country logistics happen on our end once the deposit is confirmed. You'll get a prep call with Tenzin about 30 days out.

How customizable is the itinerary?

Fully. The 6-day route shown is what we book most often because it works, but everything can flex.

Common variations: 8–10 days to add Bumthang in central Bhutan, a trekking day (Druk Path or Jomolhari), pairing with Nepal or India, slower-paced 7-day version with no driving day, or upgrading entirely to Amankora's circuit.

What's included in a Winderly Bhutan trip?

All in-country logistics: private guide and driver, hotels, meals, the Sustainable Development Fee, visa processing, and 24/7 global concierge support.

Not included: international flights to Paro, gratuities for guide and driver (~$25/day combined), optional add-on activities, and travel insurance (required, we recommend providers).

How far in advance should I book?

Aim for 4–6 months ahead for prime season (October–November or March–April), and at least 8 weeks for shoulder season.

Tiger's Nest dates and Amankora properties fill earliest. If you're flexible on dates, we can sometimes work with 6 weeks of lead time, but you'll have fewer hotel options.

Is it private or a group?

Both. Most clients book a private trip (just your party) plus our guide and driver. That's the default.

Small-group departures of 8–12 travelers run twice a year (April and October) for solo travelers and couples who want company. We post these dates on the experiences page when scheduled.

Will Annie personally lead my trip?

For small-group departures, yes. For private trips, Annie leads roughly half personally; the rest are led by our in-country partner Tenzin Dorji, a licensed Bhutanese guide we've worked with for nine years.

Either way, Annie designs the trip personally and stays available throughout. We tell you which guide you'll have when you book.

Can I extend the trip to Nepal or India?

Yes, and we recommend it. Nepal (4–6 day Kathmandu Valley add-on) is the most common extension since Paro–Kathmandu is a direct flight.

India works well via Delhi, which is often the transit point anyway. We design the combined trip as one piece so the transitions are smooth.

What if I need to cancel or postpone?

Full refund up to 90 days before departure. 50% refund 60–89 days out. Date changes (postponement) are free up to 45 days out.

Travel insurance is required for every Winderly trip and we provide a list of recommended providers when you book.
